The purpose of education has evolved over time, in a globalized and rapidly changing world, it is critical that current and future generations develop the skills to act today and find solutions to the global challenges of the future. Therefore, the student prepared for the challenges of the 21st century is not the one who simply knows, but the one capable of researching, understanding and expressing their knowledge. School education should contribute to teaching how to live and teach how to become a conscious and transformative citizen.
The changes that occurred in the teaching and learning process brought more quality to education, the protagonism of students is one of the great characteristics of education in the 21st century. The starting point is to recognize the relevance of education in understanding and solving global issues in its social, political, cultural, economic and environmental dimensions. It also implies recognizing the role of education in going beyond the development of knowledge and so-called cognitive skills – for example, reading and mathematics – to build values, social and emotional skills and attitudes among students that can facilitate international cooperation and promote social transformation.
Early childhood education of the 21st century should open the doors to the valorization of skills and investment in the potential of children, where they learn to discover their own paths in solving problems that present themselves in their life, whether at school or in their daily lives. Education must, therefore, constantly adapt to these changes in society, without neglecting the experiences, basic knowledge and results of human experience.
