Awakening to Global Education

While the world may be increasingly interconnected, human rights violations, inequality and poverty still threaten peace and sustainability. Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is UNESCO’s response to these challenges. It works by empowering students of all ages to understand what global issues are, not just local ones, and become active promoters of more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive, safe, and sustainable societies.

The notion of citizenship has been expanded as a concept of multiple perspectives and is linked to a growing interdependence and interconnectivity between countries in the economic, cultural and social areas, through greater international trade, migration, communication, among others. This notion is also linked to our concerns about global well-being beyond national borders, as well as based on the understanding that global well-being influences national and local well-being.

Despite differences in interpretation, there is a common understanding that global citizenship does not imply a legal situation. It refers more to a feeling of belonging to a broader community and to common humanity, as well as of promoting a “global look”, which links the local to the global and the national to the international. It is also a way of understanding, acting and relating to others and the environment in space and time, based on universal values, through respect for diversity and pluralism. In this context, the life of each individual has implications in everyday decisions that connect the global with the local, and vice versa.
